Your pre-departure checklist
Essential — Before booking
✓
British passport valid 6+ months from your entry date
Checked consistently at Mexican immigration, whether arriving by air or land.
✓
Know your real trip length — and say it clearly at immigration
If you need close to 180 days, state it directly when asked your purpose and length of stay. Vague answers increase the chance of a shorter grant than you actually need.
Before you fly
✓
Confirmed return or onward ticket
Genuinely important here — it's one of the clearest signals an officer uses to decide how many days to grant you, not just a formality.
✓
If flying, your FMM is usually processed automatically
Airlines increasingly transmit passenger data electronically, and many airports now just stamp your passport rather than issue a separate paper card.
✓
Entering by land? Complete your FMM in advance or at the border
Land crossings may require a printed FMM form, especially at smaller crossings — check the specific border point you'll use.
✓
Travel insurance
Not a formal entry requirement, but strongly recommended — private medical care for visitors in Mexico is billed directly and can be substantial for serious issues.
✓
Money that works in pesos
UK cards typically add ~3% forex fees. A multi-currency card helps, and Mexico is broadly card-friendly in tourist areas, cash-preferred elsewhere.
At the border
✓
Check the number of days actually written on your FMM or stamp
This is the number that legally matters, not "180 days" as a general rule. If it's fewer than you expected, you must comply with that number — it typically cannot be extended afterward.
✓
Keep your FMM record until you leave Mexico
You'll need to show it on departure. If it was a paper card, keep it safe; if digital, note your entry details in case you're asked.
✓
Never overstay the days granted
Overstaying — even by a few days — risks fines, detention, or future entry bans. Leave Mexico or formally change your immigration status before your granted period ends.
What actually happens at the airport
01
Land and proceed to immigration
No advance application needed for UK citizens. Follow signs to passport control at your arrival airport.
02
Answer the officer's questions clearly
Purpose of visit, length of stay, and sometimes accommodation details. Clear, specific, consistent answers genuinely help with how many days you're granted.
03
Receive your entry stamp or FMM
The number of days written is the maximum you're legally permitted to stay — check it before you leave the immigration desk.
04
Keep the record until departure
You'll need to present it when you leave Mexico, whether as a physical card or confirmed digital entry.
Mistakes that catch Brits out
Assuming "180 days" means you'll automatically get 180 days. It's the legal maximum, not a default. Many 2026 travellers report being granted 30-90 days instead — plan around what's actually stamped, not what you read online.
Trying a "border run" to reset your stay. Technically possible, but immigration officers — especially at land borders — have started questioning travellers who repeatedly do this, and it's not a reliable long-term strategy.
Losing track of your granted days vs. the FMM's own 180-day cap. These are two different numbers — your personal grant (which may be shorter) is what actually governs your legal stay, not the card's general validity.
Working remotely on a tourist entry. Officially not permitted under any tourist FMM, regardless of where your employer is based. Enforcement varies, but it's a genuine legal exposure, not just a technicality.
Overstaying because extensions aren't normally available. Unlike some destinations, you generally cannot extend an FMM — if your plans change, you need to leave and formally re-enter, or change your immigration status entirely.
