Entry Requirements 2026

EES is live, ETIAS is coming, and passport stamps are gone. Here's exactly what British travellers face at European borders right now โ€” and what changes later this year.

โœ“ No visa needed ๐Ÿ– EES biometrics โ€” live now ๐Ÿ“ฑ ETIAS โ€” coming Q4 2026 โฑ 90 days in any 180
๐Ÿ’ก The one-minute version: Right now you travel on your passport alone โ€” no form, no fee. But you'll register fingerprints and a facial scan at the border (EES, live since 10 April 2026). Later this year ETIAS adds a โ‚ฌ20 pre-travel authorisation. Anyone selling you an "ETIAS application" today is a scammer โ€” it isn't open yet.

๐Ÿ“…What changes and when

LIVE NOW
EES โ€” biometric border registration Launched 10 April 2026. First entry: fingerprints + facial scan at kiosks. Replaces passport stamps. Full implementation expected 7 September 2026. Expect queues at busy periods.
Q4 2026
ETIAS launches โ€” โ‚ฌ20 online authorisation Short online form before travel, valid 3 years or until passport expiry. Under-18s and over-70s free. NOT yet open โ€” no legitimate application exists today.
~Apr 2027
ETIAS becomes mandatory After a ~6-month transitional grace period. Full enforcement expected by October 2027 โ€” after that, no ETIAS means no boarding.

๐Ÿ“‹Your pre-departure checklist

Essential โ€” Before booking
โœ“
Passport: 3+ months validity beyond your return, issued within 10 years
Both rules apply post-Brexit. A passport issued more than 10 years ago fails even if it hasn't expired โ€” this catches thousands of Brits every year.
Critical
โœ“
Count your 90/180 days
All Schengen countries share one allowance โ€” days in Spain, France, and Italy all add up together. EES now tracks this automatically, so overstays are caught digitally.
Critical
โœ“
Check if ETIAS has launched before you travel
From Q4 2026, check the official EU site travel-europe.europa.eu/etias โ€” never a third-party site โ€” and apply if it's live.
Required soon
Before you fly
โœ“
Allow extra time at the border for EES
First-time registration means fingerprints and facial scan at kiosks โ€” queues at peak times, especially Dover, Eurostar, and busy Spanish airports. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.
Required
โœ“
GHIC card for emergency healthcare
The free Global Health Insurance Card covers emergency state treatment in the EU. Apply free on the NHS website โ€” never pay a third-party site for it.
Recommended
โœ“
Travel insurance on top of GHIC
GHIC doesn't cover repatriation, private clinics, or cancellation. Insurance fills the gaps.
Recommended
โœ“
Proof of accommodation, return ticket & funds
Border officers can ask for all three under Schengen rules. Rarely checked, but keep them accessible.
Recommended
โœ“
Money that works in euros
UK cards typically add ~3% on every euro transaction. A multi-currency card avoids it entirely.
Optional
On arrival
โœ“
First EES registration โ€” kiosk then officer
Facial image and four fingerprints recorded, then standard entry questions. Return visits within 3 years are faster โ€” your biometrics are already on file.
Required
โœ“
No more passport stamps โ€” screenshot your entry date
EES records replace stamps. Keep your own record of entry/exit dates in case of disputes about your 90-day count.
Tip

๐ŸšซMistakes that catch Brits out

๐Ÿ›‚ The 10-year passport rule. Renewed early pre-Brexit? Your passport may show an issue date over 10 years ago โ€” invalid for Schengen even with months of "validity" left. Check the issue date, not just the expiry.
๐Ÿ’ธ ETIAS scam sites are already live. ETIAS cannot be applied for yet. Any website taking your money for an "ETIAS application" today is fraudulent โ€” full stop.
๐Ÿงฎ Miscounting the 90/180 rule. It's a rolling window, not a calendar reset. A long spring trip can quietly eat your summer allowance โ€” and EES now catches every overstay digitally.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland and Cyprus are different. Ireland is in the Common Travel Area โ€” no EES, no ETIAS, ever. Cyprus isn't in Schengen yet but will require ETIAS. Days in either don't count toward your 90.
๐Ÿš† Eurostar and ferries count too. EES applies at St Pancras, Dover, and Folkestone โ€” not just airports. Allow extra time, especially school holidays.

EU roaming isn't free anymore
Most UK networks reintroduced EU roaming charges post-Brexit. An eSIM with EU-wide data is often cheaper than a week of daily roaming fees.
