ETIAS launches — €20 online authorisation
Short online form before travel, valid 3 years or until passport expiry. Under-18s and over-70s free. NOT yet open — no legitimate application exists today.
~Apr 2027
ETIAS becomes mandatory
After a ~6-month transitional grace period. Full enforcement expected by October 2027 — after that, no ETIAS means no boarding.

Both rules apply post-Brexit. A passport issued more than 10 years ago fails even if it hasn't expired — this catches thousands of Brits every year.

All Schengen countries share one allowance — days in Spain, France, and Italy all add up together. EES now tracks this automatically, so overstays are caught digitally.

Check if ETIAS has launched before you travel
From Q4 2026, check the official EU site travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — never a third-party site — and apply if it's live.

Allow extra time at the border for EES
First-time registration means fingerprints and facial scan at kiosks — queues at peak times, especially Dover, Eurostar, and busy Spanish airports. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.

GHIC card for emergency healthcare
The free Global Health Insurance Card covers emergency state treatment in the EU. Apply free on the NHS website — never pay a third-party site for it.

Travel insurance on top of GHIC
GHIC doesn't cover repatriation, private clinics, or cancellation. Insurance fills the gaps.

Proof of accommodation, return ticket & funds
Border officers can ask for all three under Schengen rules. Rarely checked, but keep them accessible.

Mistakes that catch Brits out
The 10-year passport rule. Renewed early pre-Brexit? Your passport may show an issue date over 10 years ago — invalid for Schengen even with months of "validity" left. Check the issue date, not just the expiry.
ETIAS scam sites are already live. ETIAS cannot be applied for yet. Any website taking your money for an "ETIAS application" today is fraudulent — full stop.
Miscounting the 90/180 rule. It's a rolling window, not a calendar reset. A long spring trip can quietly eat your summer allowance — and EES now catches every overstay digitally.
Ireland and Cyprus are different. Ireland is in the Common Travel Area — no EES, no ETIAS, ever. Cyprus isn't in Schengen yet but will require ETIAS. Days in either don't count toward your 90.
Eurostar and ferries count too. EES applies at St Pancras, Dover, and Folkestone — not just airports. Allow extra time, especially school holidays.
