Your pre-departure checklist
Essential โ Before booking
โ
British Citizen passport valid 6+ months from your entry date
This is the single most common reason UK travellers get stopped at check-in. The UAE applies this strictly โ count from the day you land in Dubai, not when you fly home.
โ
Check every traveller's passport โ UK residency doesn't transfer
If anyone in your group travels on a non-UK passport (even with a UK visa or BRP), they may need a different visa entirely โ their entry depends on their own nationality, not their UK status.
Before you fly
โ
Proof of onward or return travel
Border officials can ask for it, especially on one-way or open tickets. Keep your return booking accessible on your phone.
โ
Hotel booking or address of where you're staying
Can be requested at the border โ have it ready, even if you're staying with friends or family.
โ
Travel insurance
Not required by UAE entry law, but strongly recommended โ private healthcare in Dubai is excellent and genuinely expensive for visitors without cover.
โ
Know what's illegal to bring โ more than you'd expect
The UAE has strict rules on certain prescription medications (including some common UK painkillers and ADHD medication), CBD products, and e-cigarette liquids. Check the official list before packing.
โ
Money that works in dirhams
UK cards typically add ~3% forex fees. A multi-currency card avoids the mark-up, and Dubai is largely card-friendly if you'd rather carry less cash.
On arrival & during your stay
โ
Head to the "Visa on Arrival" immigration desk
Clearly signposted at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other UAE airports. The officer stamps your passport with the free 90-day entry โ no form to fill in advance.
โ
Track your 90 days if staying long or visiting repeatedly
The limit is 90 days within any rolling 180-day window โ not a simple per-trip reset. Frequent visitors should keep a note of their entry/exit dates.
โ
Need longer? Apply for an extension before your stamp expires
Extensions are available through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) โ fees apply and must be arranged before your 90 days run out, not after.
What actually happens at the airport
01
Land and head to immigration
UK passport holders don't need to pre-register anything โ simply follow signs to the visa/passport control area at Dubai International, Abu Dhabi, or your arrival airport.
02
Present your passport
The officer checks your passport validity (6+ months from today) and may ask about your trip โ purpose, duration, accommodation.
03
Receive your free visa stamp
A 90-day multiple-entry visit visa is stamped directly into your passport. No separate document, no app, nothing to carry beyond your passport itself.
04
You're free to explore all seven emirates
One stamp covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain โ no separate permission needed between emirates.
Mistakes that catch Brits out
The 6-month passport rule is enforced strictly. Even 5 months and 29 days of validity can mean denied boarding at Heathrow before you even reach Dubai. Check your expiry date properly, not just "it's valid for ages."
Assuming family members get the same free entry. A non-UK passport holder travelling with you โ even a spouse with indefinite leave to remain โ follows their own nationality's rules, which may mean a visa is genuinely required.
Packing the wrong medication. Several common UK prescriptions, including some ADHD medications and strong painkillers, are restricted or banned in the UAE without specific documentation. This has led to real arrests โ check the official list before travelling, not after landing.
Miscounting the 90/180 day rule on repeat visits. It's a rolling window, not a clean reset per trip. Frequent Dubai visitors โ common among UK business travellers โ can accidentally overstay without realising their allowance already ran out.
Not knowing UAE's conduct laws. Public behaviour standards are stricter than the UK โ this covers everything from physical affection in public to posting certain content online. A quick read of GOV.UK's local laws section avoids genuine legal trouble.
Smart traveller essentials
Travel insurance for the UAE
Not legally required, but Dubai's private healthcare costs are genuinely high for visitors without cover. A relatively small cost against real risk.
