ETIAS launches — €20 (~$22) online authorisation
Short online form before travel, valid 3 years or until passport expiry. Under-18s and over-70s free. NOT open yet — no legitimate application exists today.

ETIAS becomes mandatory
After a ~6-month grace period, with full enforcement expected by late 2027. After that, no ETIAS means airlines deny boarding.

Allow extra time for first-time EES registration
Facial image and four fingerprints at kiosks on your first entry. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. Repeat visits within 3 years are much faster.

Travel insurance — US health plans rarely cover Europe
Most US insurance (including Medicare) provides zero coverage abroad. European hospitals bill visitors directly.

Mistakes that catch Americans out
ETIAS scam sites are already taking money. ETIAS cannot be applied for yet — anyone charging you today for an "ETIAS application" is committing fraud. When it launches, the official fee is €20, and free for under-18s and over-70s.
Treating each country separately. "90 days in Italy then 90 in France" doesn't exist — it's 90 days total across all 29 Schengen countries in any rolling 180-day window.
Cutting passport validity close. Technically 3 months beyond departure is enough — but airlines regularly enforce 6 months at check-in. Renew early rather than argue at the gate.
Forgetting the UK is separate. London isn't Schengen — a UK stop needs its own UK ETA (£20), and UK days don't count toward your Schengen 90. Two systems, two authorisations.
Assuming US insurance travels with you. It almost never does. A hospital stay in Europe without travel insurance means paying out of pocket, then fighting for reimbursement later — if any.
