United States โ†’ Europe (Schengen)
Entry Requirements 2026

No visa needed โ€” but Europe's borders have gone digital. Here's what Americans face at Schengen borders right now, and the โ‚ฌ20 authorisation coming later this year.

โœ“ No visa needed ๐Ÿ– EES biometrics โ€” live now ๐Ÿ“ฑ ETIAS โ€” coming Q4 2026 โฑ 90 days in any 180
๐Ÿ’ก The one-minute version: Right now you travel to Europe on your passport alone โ€” no form, no fee. But since April 2026 you'll register fingerprints and a facial scan at the border (EES). Later this year, ETIAS adds a โ‚ฌ20 (~$22) pre-travel authorisation. Any site selling "ETIAS applications" today is a scam โ€” the system isn't open yet.

๐Ÿ“…What changes and when

LIVE NOW
EES โ€” biometric border registration Launched 10 April 2026. First entry: fingerprints + facial scan at kiosks, replacing passport stamps. Full implementation expected September 2026. Budget extra time at busy hubs like Paris CDG, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
Q4 2026
ETIAS launches โ€” โ‚ฌ20 (~$22) online authorisation Short online form before travel, valid 3 years or until passport expiry. Under-18s and over-70s free. NOT open yet โ€” no legitimate application exists today.
~Apr 2027
ETIAS becomes mandatory After a ~6-month grace period, with full enforcement expected by late 2027. After that, no ETIAS means airlines deny boarding.

๐Ÿ“‹Your pre-departure checklist

Essential โ€” Before booking
โœ“
US passport valid 3+ months beyond your departure from Schengen
6 months is the safe standard โ€” some airlines apply the stricter rule at check-in regardless of what Schengen technically requires.
Critical
โœ“
Count your 90/180 days across ALL Schengen countries
Days in France, Italy, and Spain all draw from one shared allowance. EES now tracks this digitally โ€” the era of un-stamped, uncounted days is over.
Critical
โœ“
Check ETIAS status before you book
From Q4 2026, check the official EU portal travel-europe.europa.eu/etias โ€” only there โ€” and apply if it's live.
Required soon
Before you fly
โœ“
Allow extra time for first-time EES registration
Facial image and four fingerprints at kiosks on your first entry. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. Repeat visits within 3 years are much faster.
Required
โœ“
Travel insurance โ€” US health plans rarely cover Europe
Most US insurance (including Medicare) provides zero coverage abroad. European hospitals bill visitors directly.
Critical
โœ“
Proof of accommodation, onward travel & funds
Schengen border officers can request all three. Rarely asked, but keep them on your phone.
Recommended
โœ“
Money that works in euros
Most US cards charge ~3% foreign transaction fees. Notify your bank of travel either way to avoid card freezes mid-trip.
Optional
On arrival
โœ“
First EES registration โ€” kiosk, then officer
Biometrics recorded, then the standard questions: purpose, duration, accommodation. Answer simply and honestly.
Required
โœ“
No more passport stamps โ€” keep your own entry record
Screenshot or note your entry and exit dates. If your 90-day count is ever disputed, your own records help.
Tip

๐ŸšซMistakes that catch Americans out

๐Ÿ’ธ ETIAS scam sites are already taking money. ETIAS cannot be applied for yet โ€” anyone charging you today for an "ETIAS application" is committing fraud. When it launches, the official fee is โ‚ฌ20, and free for under-18s and over-70s.
๐Ÿงฎ Treating each country separately. "90 days in Italy then 90 in France" doesn't exist โ€” it's 90 days total across all 29 Schengen countries in any rolling 180-day window.
๐Ÿ›‚ Cutting passport validity close. Technically 3 months beyond departure is enough โ€” but airlines regularly enforce 6 months at check-in. Renew early rather than argue at the gate.
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Forgetting the UK is separate. London isn't Schengen โ€” a UK stop needs its own UK ETA (ยฃ20), and UK days don't count toward your Schengen 90. Two systems, two authorisations.
๐Ÿฅ Assuming US insurance travels with you. It almost never does. A hospital stay in Europe without travel insurance means paying out of pocket, then fighting for reimbursement later โ€” if any.

Travel insurance that actually covers Europe
US health plans and Medicare stop at the border. Comprehensive travel medical cover including evacuation is the one non-negotiable for Europe.
